The lecture focuses on Gustav Klimt, who is an iconic and leading artist of the early 20th century in Vienna. Klimt is famous for applying ornaments from various cultures to his works. It also embodies in his later career, which Klimt used an extraordinary strategy that he incorporated Chinese patterns into figure paintings. Three issues of this theme will be laid out in this talk. In the beginning, clarifying the pictorial sources and meanings of the Chinese patterns that Klimt referenced in his later paintings. Then tracing how he was able to access these Chinese objects. In the end, analyzing how Chinese patterns accorded with Klimt’s artistic pursuit and their significance to the paintings’ owners. The research provides a new angle of transcultural art history research.
