No face - multiple concepts
St'Art Promotion is delighted to present the collaborative photography exhibition No Face by Sven Schmeler and Sisi Clees.
The concept behind the No Face project is based on multiple meanings related to the idea of face: Faces, one's physical identification, are often perceived as a roadblock to a deeper understanding of one’s true self. NO face, no more unconscious superficial opinions.
Having more meanings than the simple physical organ, faces, are also like masks, the face itself is being replaced by various facial expressions one chooses to show depends on different social identities, our faces overlap, blur and become abstract. It disguises one's true self. The authentic face has been covered by the commitment to social expectations, our desire of belonging, our fear of being who we truly are. The existence of the individual disappears and is covered by all kinds of social definitions. Are there NO (authentic) faces or are there too many? Either way, without (masked) faces, we can eventually discover the essence of individual's spirit rather than the identification of varied masks.
Moreover, as the antonym of escape, the project aims to demonstrate and reflect on the reality that many of us choose not to face up to when we face fear, envy or difficulty.
On the day of the Vernissage, a video produced by Sven and Sisi will be on display open to the public. Through the short film clip, you can discover the mysterious connection between narration and the photography series No face. The video project is in collaboration with master course Kritische Literalität und multimodale Kreativität (Assoc. Prof. BUDACH Gabriele).
The exhibition will be open to the public until September 2017.
